Rumor has it that plants named after delicious dishes sell real well. Hard to beat an orchid called ‘Peach Cobbler’, then! The only thing that’s missing is a dollop of Vanilla ice cream – you did know that Vanilla, one of the most important flavors in the history of mankind, comes from an orchid, didn’t you? Wilsonara is a man-made genus of plants made of Odontoglossums, Oncidiums, and Cochlioda, which has been recently merged back into Oncidiums. Why? Well, that’s what botanists do, but sometimes they do too much of it. Most Wilsonaras you see in cultivation have been bred for floriferousness, and a mature plant can produce a massive spray of blooms. One of the parents of Pacific Passage is Onc. sphacelatum, which produces a lovely yellow flower striped with brown stripes, and comes through strongly in ‘Peach Cobbler’. We’ve had other crosses made with the same parent, and plants are always very vigorous, and easy to grow.
